Gear Checklist
To maximize your day on the water in Ontario, you will need to bring a few items of your own.
If you are just starting out, we can provide all the gear you need!! If you are bringing your own equipment we have listed below some details for equipment that will be needed.
Rods
Depending on the species a 9 foot rod ranging from 5-8 weight is suitable. A 9 foot 6 weight combination would be preferred with a weight forward floating line for bass and a 10 foot 7 or 8 wt rod with a large arbor reel and wf floating line for steelhead.
Fly Lines
Floating lines of a weight forward taper will be best for most fishing situations. Sub-surface lines, such as Sink-Tips and Intermediate, are useful for stripping streamers and swinging flies!
Leaders and Tippets
9 foot tapered leaders work well .....8-12 lb for steelhead and bass. Tippet spools in 2-6X
Waders and Wading Boots
Depending on the weather, breathable waders over heavy fleece undergarments, lightweight neoprene or heavier (4mm+) neoprene are good choices as well. Wading boots with felt or other non-slip soles. In summer, wading sandals/shoes with shorts works fine.
Fly Patterns
Egg sucking leeches, sculpin variations, stone fly nymphs, and egg imitations are preferred for steelhead in spring and fall. For summer smallmouth bass, any minnow, crayfish imitation, or leech pattern work fine.
Other Essentials
Fishing license, pants or shorts with a belt (to hold up hip waders) polarized sunglasses, camera, hat with a brim for sun and eye protection, vest, light rainwear, backpack for your gear, nippers, forceps or hemostats.
